The Biblical practice of the First Fruits is first mentioned in Exodus 23:19, where God commanded the Israelites to bring the first and best portion of their harvest as an offering to Him. This offering symbolised gratitude, trust and recognition that all blessings come from the God. By giving the first and best of their harvest, the Israelites also demonstrated their faith that the Lord would provide for them in the future.
In the same way, those who follow God’s commandments are considered His “First Fruits.” James 1:18 states, “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.” This means those who live in obedience and holiness are set apart for God, just as the First Fruits were dedicated to Him. They serve as an example of God’s transformative power, living in a way that reflects His glory.
Mary Magdalene perfectly exemplifies this. After being delivered by the Lord Jesus (see Luke 8:2) and experiencing His power, she fully devoted her life to His service, following Him even to the cross when many others fled. As a result of her unwavering devotion, she became the FIRST person to whom Jesus appeared after His resurrection (see John 20:16-17).
Nowadays, it’s no different. As Christians, when we offer our First Fruits to God – not only financially but also spiritually, through our actions, decisions, and our daily surrender to Him – we are showing that we honour Him above all else. In this faith, we will dedicate this weekend (from 5 to 6 April) as the Weekend of the First Fruit, where we will prioritise the Almighty and invest our time in seeking and serving Him.
On Saturday, 5 April, we will hold a special march starting at 10am. We will take to the streets to reach out to those who are suffering, letting them know there is hope and sharing the good news about the upcoming Life Shift event, which will take place on Easter Sunday.
On 6 April, we will have a special Sunday service at 10am (also at 7.30am) where we will seek His presence and participate in the Feast of the First Fruits – a ceremony where we present our First Fruits to God as a representation of our faithfulness to Him and are anointed with blessed oil upon our heads as a symbol to mark us as His servants.
Join us at your nearest Universal Church for this powerful weekend where we will express our gratitude to our Lord and Saviour.
