Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holidays around the world. For many, it’s a joyful time filled with family gatherings, colourful eggs, sweet chocolates, and of course, the beloved Easter Bunny. However, beyond the commercial traditions and seasonal fun, Easter holds a much deeper and life-changing meaning, especially when we consider its origins and spiritual significance.
While many associate Easter with springtime festivities, the roots of this celebration go back thousands of years to a key moment in the history of the Hebrew people. Known in the Bible as Passover, this event commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
According to the Book of Exodus, God sent a series of plagues upon Egypt to convince Pharaoh to let His people go. The final plague was the most severe: the death of every firstborn. However, God provided the Israelites with a way to protect themselves. He instructed them to sacrifice a lamb and mark their doorposts with its blood. When the plague came, it “passed over” the homes covered by the lamb’s blood, sparing them from destruction (see Exodus 12).
The Biblical link to Easter is not only found in the Old Testament. When Jesus came to earth to offer Himself as a sacrifice on the cross, He was referred to as the Lamb of God, shedding His blood to free humanity from the slavery of sin, guilt, and spiritual death. Just as the lamb’s blood in Egypt meant protection and freedom for the people of Israel, the blood of Jesus now delivers and saves all who believe in Him.
“…For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)
For Christians, Easter is not just a memorial of Christ’s death but a celebration of His resurrection – a new beginning, a victory over death, and an invitation to a transformed life. It’s the promise that, through faith in Jesus, we too can be delivered from whatever has been enslaving our hearts, minds and lives.
This Easter Sunday, you are invited to experience more than just tradition. You’re invited to experience transformation. At the Universal Church, we will be hosting a special event called Life Shift, where you can encounter the same God who delivered the Israelites and raised Jesus from the dead.
