A new British study published in the scientific journal “Nature Geosciences” found that due to global warming and climate change in Antarctica, the vegetation cover in the region has increased more than tenfold in the last four decades. According to scientists, rising temperatures have contributed to the continent’s melting and, consequently, the increase in green areas.
In 1986, the area covered by undergrowth was less than 1 km², but from 2016 onwards, the sea ice began to recede. As a result, in 2021, the green area increased to approximately 12 km². While this may not seem like a big deal considering the peninsula covers a total area of 500,000 km², scientists believe there is cause for concern since this phenomenon is contributing to the emergence of viruses highly adaptable to growing temperatures, as well as the invasion of non-native species, threatening the organisms in the local ecosystem.
There are numerous examples in the news highlighting nature imbalance, such as the recent passage of Hurricane Milton through the United States resulting in the unfortunate loss of 16 lives and leaving over two million homes and businesses without power. It is clear that the extreme weather conditions on the planet and the impact of climate change on polar regions are nature’s response to mankind’s reckless treatment towards the environment. However, the Bible warns us of this situation as one of the many signs that will precede the return of the Lord Jesus and the end of time.
The Book of Revelation describes episodes of extreme heat capable of causing pain and burns to human beings: “Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.” (Revelation 16.8-9)
Renato Cardoso, author of the book “The World Will Burn”, also addressed this subject: “It will be one more sign that all nature is in conflict with man – an unmistakable message of the judgements of God. God often allows people to go through difficult situations in the hope that they realise they’re going the wrong path, and sincerely repent. Sadly, even in such great agony, suffering, and pain, humankind will not humble themselves before God. In fact, they will blaspheme and blame Him for all they’re going through.”
