The Importance of Forgiveness for Physical and Mental Health

Forgiving

When someone wrongs us, it can leave deep emotional scars that make it difficult to let go of resentment. Holding onto anger may seem justified at times, as it provides a sense of control or protection from future harm. However, the truth is that the inability to forgive can weigh heavily on our well-being.

A lack of forgiveness can disturb both our physical and mental health. Constantly reliving emotionally draining situations and harbouring past traumas can lead to increased levels of sadness, anger, and stress, negatively affecting our overall health. A study published in the Psychological Science Journal found that holding grudges can erode both mental and physical health, increasing the likelihood of issues such as depression and coronary heart disease, which may even result in premature death.

Not forgiving someone is like carrying an emotional anchor that keeps you stuck in the past, hindering new opportunities and positive experiences. By insisting on keeping the past alive, you harm your present and revive negative feelings that adversely influence your future.

Forgiveness can feel like an uphill battle, as memories of hurt resurface and the desire for justice or retribution lingers. However, it is essential to break this cycle to live a lighter and healthier life. Research from Johns Hopkins University shows that forgiveness can reduce the risk of heart attack, lower cholesterol levels, improve sleep quality, and regulate depression, anxiety, and stress levels.

Forgiving does not mean forgetting what happened; rather, it means letting go of negative feelings and avoiding thoughts that fuel those emotions. It is a conscious decision that can transform the life of the person who forgives. By choosing to forgive, you not only take a positive step to being healthy but also follow the example set by the Lord Jesus, who asked His Father to forgive those who despised and hurt Him (see Luke 23:34).
