The Dangers of Narcissism.

The dangers of narcissism

A recent study from City, University of London, revealed that most narcissistic men display self-confident, aggressive and socially dominant behaviour. The research showed that around 75% of people diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder are men, but even among those who have not been diagnosed, many of them consider themselves superior to others. There are vain and arrogant men in all spheres of society, from those who think they are “the best drivers” to those who consider themselves more intelligent, handsome or clever.

The ruin of pride
Narcissism, with its characteristics of grandiosity and assertiveness, could lead to a painful future. The Bible warns us that “pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). This is a warning for people to analyse the way they think about themselves and change if they realise that they are arrogant. The Word of God is clear: “…whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12).

Seeking the Holy Spirit
To be free from being narcissistic, arrogant and overbearing, people need to seek the Holy Spirit. He is the One who grants the necessary balance for men not to drown in their own vanity. Among several biblical examples, the best one is that of Jesus, who despite being perfect was not arrogant. If you want to have a balanced life, it’s essential to follow His example.

Narcissism is a real and growing problem in today’s society, especially among men. However, the Bible shows us a different path from the one the world teaches us, and following in the footsteps of Jesus is the only way to avoid the ruin that pride brings and achieve a life of true honour and balance.
