Being a friend of God is a privilege granted for a select few who actively seek Him. To attain this privilege, it is essential that we humbly and wholeheartedly submit to His will. On the contrary, becoming His enemies requires no significant effort; it merely involves resisting the commandments given by the Almighty and allying with the pleasures of this world, as the Holy Scriptures warn:
“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4)
God’s friends have one characteristic in common: humility. Contrary to what many consider, being humble has nothing to do with your economic condition, but rather with the ability to resist your own self, submitting to and pleasing the Almighty, following the same example of the Lord Jesus.
Furthermore, those who submit to God are able to resist the devil’s attacks and, thus, achieve grace and the Kingdom of Heaven.
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
God is pleased with the humble, but those who resist His will are met with resistance from Him, as stated in the Bible:
“(…) Therefore He says: God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
This is because the proud person’s faith lies in his own ability, strength and understanding, establishing himself as his own master. However, no matter how great your earthly influence is, it has no value before the Almighty.
The offer accepted by God requires more than religious practices or charity, it requires sincerity and humility from those who wish to approach His Presence. And this is a matter of decision!
Resisting God’s will or being resisted by Him are daily choices made through our attitudes in relation to our communion with the Most High.
