Reprise for UCKG’s Catford Pop-up Vaccination Centre

The UCKG HelpCentre at 1 Bromley Road, Catford completed its pop-up vaccination project on Saturday 11 September, by vaccinating 64 people against COVID-19, using both the AstraZeneca and Pfizer jabs.

The aim was to finish off the good work started in July, when the clinic opened on a walk-in basis for the general public as well as HelpCentre members and users of its weekly soup kitchen, who’d had problems in getting their first jabs. In fact 89% of those who attended the clinic in September were there for a second jab, making it a case of ‘job well done’.

The HelpCentre had also been keen to encourage members of the local black and minority ethnic communities to come forward, by providing a convenient vaccination hub in a good location in Lewisham. And it was a success on this score, too, with attendees predominantly being of black and mixed heritage.

The clinic was run under the auspices of the NHS South East London Clinical Commissioning Group and on both occasions a team of NHS professionals were there to administer the vaccinations. The UCKG HelpCentre’s community outreach team provided hosting and general support, and much enjoyed working with the NHS once more.

 The Catford Soup Kitchen

The UCKG’s Catford soup kitchen is open every Saturday from 11am to 1pm to provide soup, bread and light refreshments to people in need. Anyone who is homeless, in temporary accommodation, or low waged is especially welcome.

Feeding anywhere between 50 and 200+ people each week during the pandemic, the soup kitchen volunteers source ingredients for the soups and take-home packs they prepare from FareShare, supermarkets and local businesses and individuals.
