Life is often a journey filled with experiences and life lessons that shape who we are. In order to help others, Reddit users had an open discussion about the life lessons they wish they had learnt earlier in their lives. Here are some of their responses:
Be responsible for your own life
Do not allow people to control your life, whether it’s your parents or your friends; do not spend the entirety of your life pleasing others. Take responsibility and ownership of your own life. Make your own decisions and make a conscious effort to be in control. The more you allow others to control your life, ‘the more likely you will be doing something you absolutely hate’.
Stop eating junk food
No matter how old you are, the earlier you find a balanced diet with a regular exercise regime, the better it will be for you – in both the present and in the long run. ‘A good workout routine doesn’t balance a bad diet.’ – thebearsandthebees
Socialise more
Whether it’s meeting with friends, family or co-workers, by socialising you learn new things, you meet new people, and you get the chance to talk about the good and the bad things going on in your life. Although life can get busy it is very important to set aside time for the people in your life. Socialising will leave a positive impact on your life.
Stop comparing yourself to others
Comparing yourself to anyone else will make you feel like you are never good enough and this will have a negative impact on your self-esteem. Focus on your own growth and your own goals. Channel your energy into bettering yourself. ‘While some competition and ambition is healthy, you should try to focus on yourself, because comparing yourself to others almost never bodes well for your self-esteem’ – cosmicality
Exercise
Exercising on a regular basis is healthy for the mind and body. It can drastically lower a person’s stress levels and puts people in a good mood. ‘More often than not I’m leaving the gym feeling good about myself/my life. Plus, it works wonders with how you feel about yourself.’ – IcantEvn
Stop trying to be perfect
Perfection is an impossible thing to achieve and can often lead to stress and anxiety. No one is perfect and that’s okay. Accept and learn from your flaws and take every opportunity to appreciate yourself for exactly who you are. Don’t strive to be perfect; instead, be the best version of yourself. ‘You don’t have to be perfect.’ – DeviMars
Always be kind
Treat others the way you would like to be treated, especially your loved ones. ‘Always treat people well while you can. I lost my mum when I was 16 and I still get flashbacks to every time I snapped at her.’ – Kronosbus
Save more and avoid debt
Falling into debt can be very easy these days, so it is important to save as much as you can and spend wisely. Try keeping a log of your expenses, so that you can keep track of spending habits and can even plan when to treat yourself. ‘It’s so much better to save up for something than to buy it on credit. Especially when you want multiple things. That cost me seven years of cashless hell as I fought to repay huge debts.’ – tvbeth
Work hard at your studies
It’s good to establish a good study routine that works well for you; it will make it easier for you in the future. ‘Adopt good study habits. I am in my sophomore year of college and just now trying to get a handle on studying.’ – TheUselessXman
Leave toxic relationships
Whether it’s a relationship or a friendship, be courageous enough to cut off that toxic relationship that is bringing only negativity to your life. Know that you deserve better. ‘Don’t be afraid to leave a bad relationship. What are you going to do? Just be unhappy the rest of your life?’ – DoctorRabidBadger
Be honest with your partner
Ever heard the phrase ‘honesty is the best policy’? Well, it really is. If you want a healthy relationship, it’s important to be open and honest with each other. ‘Be honest and authentic with your feelings in a relationship. Not wanting to share with them to avoid an argument is just putting off the inevitable. If you can’t be yourself in your relationship it is not truly a connected relationship.’ – iSoReddit
Think about the gains
In all the decisions you make, always think about what you can gain from making that choice. Think about the positives and have confidence in your decisions. Even if things do go wrong there is always a lesson to be learnt. You are never truly at a loss. ‘Think about what you have to gain, not what you have to lose.’ – Kastol
Believe in yourself and be confident
If you want to fulfil your goals and dreams, self-belief is a must. ‘Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there – hiding in your shell only hurts you. I read somewhere that confidence is entering a room and already believing that the people there like you.’ – BangerHardlyKnowHer
