Mindful Eating Tips for a Healthier Festive Season

Healthy End of Year Meal

As the festive season approaches, many people struggle to balance gatherings and celebrations – filled with indulgent foods and desserts – with a healthy diet. Winter naturally makes us feel hungrier, and when presented with a beautiful table full of treats that aren’t readily available throughout the year, it becomes difficult to say no.

However, you don’t need to run away from the table or stick to a very strict diet. It’s completely okay to enjoy quality time with your loved ones and share a comforting meal with them. The key is moderation and mindfulness about what you’re eating. Here are some tips that may help:

Don’t overindulge

Just because the table is full of options doesn’t mean you need to try everything. Choose your favourite dishes and savour them in smaller portions, rather than mindlessly indulging on all that’s available.

Have some healthy snacks beforehand

If you’re going to an end-of-year gathering or event, having a light, healthy snack before you leave home can be a great idea. This way, you won’t arrive too hungry, which will reduce your chances of overeating.

Check the menu in advance

If you’re going to a restaurant, it’s wise to check the menu beforehand and already decide what you plan to eat. This will give you more time to think about your health when making your choice.

Mind your sides

Not all Christmas food is unhealthy. The traditional turkey, for instance, is low in fat and rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals. But instead of pairing it with pigs in blankets and drowning it in gravy, consider serving it with vegetables and a light orange or cranberry sauce.

Make time for physical activity

We’re not suggesting you go to the gym every day during the holiday season, but you can maintain your health by going for short walks after big meals. When planning your holiday schedule, you can also include activities that keep you active, such as ice skating.

The choices you make today regarding your health will directly impact your well-being tomorrow, so be wise! At the Universal Church, we have the “Health Day” meetings, where we not only discuss the importance of taking care of our health but also show how faith can play a crucial role in this area, as a complement to medical advice. Join us this Tuesday at your nearest Universal Church.

Event: Health Day
Date and Time: Tuesdays at 7:30pm (also at 7am, 10am & 3pm)
Location: At your local Universal Church
