In a world saturated with information, opinions, and relentless noise, the old adage, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything” has never been more relevant. It’s a call to clarity in a time of confusion—a reminder that, without a solid foundation of values, beliefs, or purpose, we risk being swayed by every trend, influenced by every message, and lost in a sea of conflicting ideologies.
Taking a stand means having a set of core principles that guide your actions and decisions. These principles act like a compass in a world that’s constantly shifting. Whether it’s honesty, compassion, justice, freedom, or responsibility, knowing what you stand for helps you navigate life with intention.
The question is: where do these core principles come from? They come from the Word of God. When we understand what is written and apply it in our lives, we become less susceptible to false information, less likely to give in to peer pressure, and more capable of standing strong during difficult times. We won’t be swayed by every passing trend or shaken by every news headline. Instead, we’ll view the world through the lens of our faith—anchored in what we know to be right and true.
Imagine this moment: Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, approaches Jesus with a jar of expensive perfume—likely worth her entire life’s savings. She pours it over His feet and wiped them with her hair. It’s a powerful act of love and faith, showing that, to her, Jesus was worth far more than anything money could buy.
By anointing His feet and wiping them with her hair (which was considered a woman’s glory), Mary humbled herself completely. She’s showing total submission and humility before Jesus.
Not everyone appreciated Mary’s actions. Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, criticised her, saying the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus came to her defence. This reveals an important truth: when we choose to honour God, we may face opposition. At times, we may stand alone. Criticism, rejection, and isolation may come—but God Himself will stand in our defence.
In uncertain times, it’s easy to blend in and follow the crowd. But the price of not standing for something can be high—it can lead to a loss of direction, identity, purpose, and most importantly, salvation.
That’s why it’s crucial to stand firm in our beliefs. And that’s why we invite you to attend the ‘Defending Our Faith’ Bible Study this Wednesday, 16th April, at 7:30pm, during the Holy Week. It’s not only about strengthening your personal walk with God—it’s about showing Him He is worth everything.
Like Mary, we have an opportunity to show God that He comes first in our lives. When we pour ourselves out in devotion to Him, we can trust that He will pour out His Spirit upon those who truly believe.
Remember: If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.
Mary gave what was most precious to her. What will you give to God?
