Feeling Stressed? You’re Not Alone

Stressed
Stress is something most of us have experienced at some point in our lives, and sadly, it’s becoming more common in the workplace.

A report by the Commission for Healthier Working Lives, has revealed that British workplaces are among the most demanding in Europe. Long hours, tight deadlines, and limited control over how work is carried out are widespread, yet these pressures don’t necessarily lead to greater productivity. Three in five UK workers say they face tight deadlines, while two in five reports having to work at a high speed. Meanwhile, just a third feel they have the freedom to manage their own workload. The report warned that the UK ranks among the worst in Europe when it comes to job demands, lack of autonomy, and work-related stress. Alarmingly, around half of British workers admit to feeling exhausted by their jobs.

The stress levels in the workplace have steadily risen over the past 25 years, highlighting an urgent need for change.

The tragic story of Belinda Mizen, a 49-year-old tech executive, is a sobering reminder of how devastating unchecked stress can be. Belinda, who held a senior position at a software firm, sadly passed away last August after taking an overdose of prescription medication. A coroner’s report revealed that she was suffering from extreme stress, chronic pain, and severe exhaustion at the time. It’s believed she was self-medicating in an attempt to cope with her symptoms — a heartbreaking example of how stress can spiral out of control.

April marks Stress Awareness Month, an ideal moment to reflect on your wellbeing and look out for others who may be struggling. This year’s theme, #LeadWithLove, encourages us to approach one another with kindness, empathy, and understanding. By showing compassion and creating safe spaces for open conversations, we can help foster healthier, more supportive environments both at work and beyond.
