Last month, the Assisted Dying Bill passed a key hurdle with the majority in support. However, this is just the beginning of a long process before it can become law. Despite the majority vote in favour of the Bill on 29 November, this does not automatically mean it will become law. The Bill still needs to pass several more stages, and it will be months before a definitive conclusion is reached. However, if approved, England and Wales could join the small number of places around the world where assisted dying is permitted.
According to Labour MP Kim Leadbeater, it may take 2–3 years to implement, allowing time for consultations to ensure the law is ethical and practical. If passed, the law would allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales the choice to end their lives with specific safeguards and protections in place.
