This year’s London Marathon was a landmark event for the city, drawing over 56,000 participants—the highest number of starters ever recorded for any marathon worldwide. It was also a historic occasion for the UCKG HelpCentre, as Emmanuel Eghobamien became its first-ever representative to take on the 26.2-mile challenge.
Last Sunday’s marathon took place under sunny skies, with temperatures around 22°C, making it one of the warmest marathons in the event’s history and a challenging but rewarding experience for all involved. The streets of London were alive with energy as spectators turned out in full force, lining the route from Greenwich to Central London to cheer on the marathon runners. Supporters waved homemade signs and applause. Some participants wore bold costumes that added to the vibrant atmosphere. The sense of unity and support was felt by all—especially by first-time marathon runners like Emmanuel.
Among the elite athletes, Tigst Assefa broke the women’s-only world record, while Sebastian Sawe clinched victory in the men’s race with a time just over two hours.
But for many runners, including Emmanuel, the main goal was simply to cross the finish line — an achievement in itself. But behind every step was a meaningful purpose.
Emmanuel’s motivation was clear: to raise money for the Victory Youth Group (VYG), an initiative that helps inspire young people to make positive changes in their lives.
Covering the full 42.2km, Emmanuel ran an estimated 55,000 steps but knowing that every step he took, he was helping pave the way for a brighter future for the next generation.
His fundraising efforts have already brought in £6,976, with donations still coming in. These funds will be used to support and expand the VYG’s work across the UK.
Speaking after completing the race, Emmanuel shared: “It was a true honour to be the first person to run the London Marathon on behalf of the UCKG HelpCentre, especially for the Victory Youth Group, where I’ve volunteered for the past eight years.”
His participation marks the beginning of what the UCKG HelpCentre hopes will be an ongoing involvement in this iconic event.
