Being rich towards God

Our soul has many desires, which are the intense feelings we have inside us for the things that we find appealing. This is true for all human beings; however, not all of the desires we have are good for us. In the Bible, when God speaks about the heart, He is also referring to the soul, as the heart and the soul are closely connected.

The Bible says that the heart is deceitful above all else, and this is because all sorts of things come out of the heart – both good and bad. It is able to deceive us into thinking that by having certain things, everything will be well with us; nevertheless, today there are many people who are left with irremovable scars because they made certain decisions based on the cravings and desires of their heart and soul.

Jesus shared, with His disciples, a parable of a rich man whose land was producing plentifully. Therefore, this man made further plans for himself on Earth so that he would be able to say to himself,  … Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take rest. Eat, drink, and be merry” (Luke 12:19).

We are all made up of mind, body and soul. Our mind is closely connected to our spirit, which is the breath of life that God breathed into all mankind. When a person dies physically, their body returns to ashes, as it was originally made, and their spirit returns to God. The only thing that remains is their soul. Although the mind, body and soul make up a person as a whole, the soul is who we really are. It is where our feelings, desires and cravings are stored. It is the part of us that never dies.

So what happens to our soul when we die physically? Well, the answer to this depends exclusively on what we sow whilst here on Earth. But ultimately, when we die, our soul will go to one of these two places: heaven or hell.

The problem is that many people forget about the natural cause of life; they forget that after we are born, we live on this Earth, but then eventually we will die. For this reason, many people live as if they will never die. They invest everything in satisfying the cravings of their soul, but they forget that their soul is immortal, and once the person dies, their soul goes to a final destination.

It is not wrong to be rich, to have nice houses, nice cars, etc. But the problem is when these things take priority in our lives. When this takes up your entire mind and heart and you start living for the pleasures of your soul. You can have those things to show the glory of God in your life, but don’t live for those things.

This is why Jesus responded this way to the rich man: “You fool! This night your soul will be required of you. Then whose will those things be which you have provided?” (Luke 12:20).

The man became so excited that he was becoming even richer that he started speaking to his soul. But he most definitely wasn’t aware that it was that very night that he would die.

The truth is that we are never aware of when we are going to die. But no one can run away from death. However, the only way we can be sure we will go to heaven is when the Holy Spirit reveals this to us. And who are those who will not receive eternal salvation? It is those who store up treasures for themselves on Earth but are not rich toward God.

This is why living a life of total obedience, which sometimes means starving the desires of our soul, is very important. The narrow way is obedience, and this requires sacrifice.
