The youngsters of Holbeach Primary School, Catford can now have open-air conservation lessons thanks to the good work of the local branch of the Victory Youth Group (VYG).
As the school does not have a suitable space for outside educational studies on site, the youths took time out from their normal weekend activities to clear an area in Ladywell Fields park, Lewisham, for the purpose.
In effect this formalised a long-standing arrangement as the school had been coming to Ladywell Fields for years. But with no funding for such things, the only way to create a special space where the children could study was to rely on volunteers.
The project was arranged through Jordan Ihama, Waterlink Way Project Officer at Lewisham Council, and was completed on Saturday 16 July. A group of around 14 youths from Catford VYG dedicated a total of some 35 hours between them, to cleaning up the immediate area, trimming the fenced area, making a path, and tidying the teaching area.
As one of the volunteers, Mayowa Akinduro, put it, the work involved making a little seating area. “We’ve cleaned all the grass and logs then put down some wood chip and replaced the logs.”
The project formed part of the VYG’s annual ‘We Care! – Youth Engagement’ initiative, which is a community outreach programme delivered by the youth arm of the UCKG HelpCentre.
The way ‘We Care! – Youth Engagement’ is set up, is that the UCKG, a charity and Pentecostal church, approaches local authorities or others everywhere it has established HelpCentres. Arrangements are made for teams of youths from its local VYG branches to undertake tasks of benefit to the wider community, with the aim of making a positive difference.
