Are you caught up in a snare?

God has the power to help you,

Are you caught up in a snare?

In the modern city, snares are nowhere to be seen, but if you’ve ever been to a farm or visited the wild, you might know how a snare works.

Snares are trapping devices set up to capture animals. They are often set up in high traffic areas, near trails and watering holes. A long piece of rope or wire is tied to a stationary object, like a tree and the loop of the wire is suspended from a branch or a small tree that catches an animal by the neck. Although only a certain number of animals are allowed to be snared in the UK, by responsible snare operators, this is not too different to what is happening to many adults out there.

Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all? (Amos 3:5)

If there was no snare, then certainly an animal would not get caught, correct? But what are the snares of life that are keeping people entangled?

First of all, a snare has to look attractive, and this is something that the enemy is a specialist on. He makes what is wrong look attractive, just to cause more havoc in a person’s life.

  • A married man who has a disagreement with his wife can be snared by a younger woman who makes him feel good.
  • A young woman who aspires for a prince charming can be snared by any man who says to her ear all she’s ever wanted to hear.
  • A ‘make money quick’ scheme is a snare for someone who is eager to be rich.
  • A youth who aspires freedom, can be snared by the appearance of the world to disregard any advice soundly offered by his or her parents.

These are just a few examples of some types of snares we can fall into, but a snare can be anything that looks attractive but deep down has bad roots. No one will admit they are in a snare until afterwards when it’s too late.

There are many examples of people of faith who got caught up in a snare because it was disguised as a blessing. Yes, the enemy is cunning, but know that any “blessing” that comes our way and will distance us from God, is not a blessing; it’s a snare to make our faith grow cold.

Can you think of any snare that may be in your life? God has the power to help you be free from it. Imagine the gratitude one would have of being set free from a snare? Remember that the enemy will always try to set traps for our downfall, but if we’re alert, we will not fall into them.

“…and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2.26)
