There were treats in store for the 51 people who came along to the UCKG HelpCentre’s soup kitchen in Leeds on Saturday 6 June, thanks to an exceptionally generous donation by FareShare, the food redistribution organisation.
The food parcels they received included fresh fruit, such as mangos and grapes as well as basics comprising juice packs, milk, cereals, canned food, bread, and vegetables. This was in addition to the fresh, home made soup provided and cooked by members of the HelpCentre, who were also running the soup kitchen, to the high safety standard that is required today.
“I believe that FareShare’s donation of 155 kilograms of food is the biggest that they have ever given to the Leeds HelpCentre soup kitchen, and am exceedingly grateful for it,” said Pastor Marco, who runs the HelpCentre. “The food went to 27 homeless people, 15 families and a handful of elderly people and youths, who all were having difficulty in providing themselves with enough to eat.
It is not only the recipients of the food who are benefitting from the soup kitchen, however. Ebenezer, one of the volunteers said that helping there eased the tensions of the lockdown. Both he and his fellow volunteer, Joycelyn (seen on the side picture above) appreciate the opportunity to give something back to the community, having been through their own hard times in the past.
The Leeds HelpCentre runs its regular Saturday soup kitchen from 11am until 1pm at its premises at 12 Regent Street, LS2 7QA, and aims to provide wholesome basic food for people who are struggling as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. It normally helps around 50 people per week.
The soup kitchen is run and operated by volunteers from the UCKG, who provide their own PPE and observe all necessary rules for safe service.
