a real achievement,
The UCKG Community Outreach Group has been recognised by Lewisham Council for their Soup Kitchen serving the local community.
The Catford Soup Kitchen and its volunteers won the ‘Community Groups’ category of the Lewisham Council ‘Mayor’s Award for Volunteering’ for their dedication and passion towards helping others. They were chosen out of over 80 applications this year thus representing a real achievement.
The Mayor’s Award scheme was first introduced in 2017 in recognition of people, community projects and businesses who volunteer their spare time in Lewisham to make it a better place.
The award was given by Lewisham Mayor Damien Egan who tweeted last week: “We recognised the contribution of over 60 amazing individuals and organisations – and heard some moving stories too. Thank you for everything you all do for our borough!”
The Catford Soup Kitchen which was opened in 2017 is an initiative of the UCKG HelpCentre and runs every Saturday between 11am and 3pm. It has over 15 volunteers who feed between 45 to 90 people every weekend.
Last year they collected nearly 8,000kg of food from Lidl, Aldi, Waitrose, Tesco and Greggs and they also work with FareShare, a company that redistribute surplus food to charities.
Catford Soup Kitchen Manager Kim Powell, says: “The impact we have is far reaching. We help people who are homeless, those on low incomes, people who are in work but are still under the poverty line, families with small children and the elderly who struggle on only their pension”.
Just like they did last year, the Soup Kitchen will be open on Christmas Day 2019 for those who need it most.
