The UCKG HelpCentre’s national bric-a-brac appeal in support of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) collected 3.63 tonnes of quality goods for the UK’s leading heart health charity during February, with the bulk of that from the London area.
Collections were organised at 25 HelpCentres in England and one at Cardiff in Wales as part of the UCKG HelpCentre’s 2014 community outreach programme, with HelpCentre members turning out their own cupboards and asking friends and neighbours to do the same. Local communities where UCKG HelpCentres are based were also leafleted, asking householders to contribute as well.
Kim Powell, who coordinates the outreach programme said: “We believe in helping people on a practical level. As coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, it seemed a good idea to do something for the BHF because of the way it helps sufferers and funds research.
“We also took the opportunity to alert members at our HelpCentres to the importance of heart health.”
Having now received all the items for sale at their shops, Karen O’Donoghue, Stock Generation Manager for the BHF said: “The British Heart Foundation is absolutely delighted with the recent support from the UCKG HelpCentre, with centres donating almost 200 boxes of unwanted items to our shops. This is a fantastic way for an organisation to support the BHF and generate much-needed items to sell in our shops and join the fight against heart disease.”
The biggest collections were gathered at the HelpCentres in Finsbury Park (16 boxes/317kg), Willesden Green (15 boxes/187.5kg), Brixton (13 boxes/343kg), and Peckham (12 boxes /314kg). Outside London the two Birmingham branches at Lozells and Bullring produced a combined total of 17 boxes of bric-a-brac weighing 426kg. The full results of the collections are as follows:
