UCKG has joined forces with the innovative Male Cancer Awareness Campaign (MCAC) to present a Male Cancer Awareness Event on Saturday 26 June 2010 at its HelpCentre in the Rainbow Theatre, Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park. The event, which is free, is expected to attract men from all over North London and is open to all.
The objective is to help in educating men about cancers that can affect their most intimate body parts and overcome the embarrassment that causes so many to delay in consulting a doctor. The fact is that some 35,000 men are diagnosed with male cancers in Britain each year; across Europe the figure is a staggering 300,000. Early diagnosis increases the chances of successful treatment.
Starting at 3pm, UCKG’s Male Cancer Awareness Event will follow a similar format to the highly successful Female Cancer Awareness Event that its Community Outreach team delivered in March 2010.
This time there will be a presentation by Patrick Cox, the chief executive of MCAC (Male Cancer Awareness Campaign –(www.malecancer.org). It will be followed by an advice clinic where male nurses will be available to answer questions in private from men of all ages.
Attendees will receive an information pack with literature from the NHS and various others organisations on prostate, bowel and testicular cancers, which are the three main male forms of cancer. As usual, the UCKG HelpCentre will provide free refreshments.
The organiser, Marco Andrade of the UCKG HelpCentre’s Community Outreach team, said: “We are very pleased to be working with MCAC having been impressed by its frank and open approach. Its enthusiasm for reaching out to men through events such as ours matches our commitment to outreach and support for communities.
“There have been tremendous advances in cancer treatment in recent years. Yet as we learn through our pastoral work, men frequently fail to take proper care of their health and lack basic knowledge that should prompt them to seek help.
“Unnecessarily premature deaths from male cancers are bad for men and bad for their families and close friends. We are committed to making a difference through this event.”
