For decades, Israel has faced continuous conflicts and military engagements, making warfare and attacks an unfortunate reality in the region. The country has also been subjected to persistent rocket attacks from Gaza and southern Lebanon, creating a constant security challenge for its citizens. This volatile geopolitical landscape requires Israel to remain vigilant against potential threats.
To counter these ongoing risks, Israel relies on the Iron Dome – a sophisticated mobile air defence system designed to intercept and neutralise incoming rockets and artillery shells. Introduced in 2011, the Iron Dome has proven to be a game-changer, significantly reducing civilian casualties and infrastructure damage by successfully intercepting the majority of incoming threats.
The system identifies these threats and operates using radar-guided interception technology, which targets and destroys rockets before they reach populated areas. Over the years, the Iron Dome continually evolves and has successfully adapted to intercept more advanced threats, including cruise missiles and drones, making it an essential component of Israel’s defence strategy.
The concept of the Iron Dome serves as a profound metaphor for spiritual resilience. Just as Israel’s defence system protects its citizens from physical attacks, we must build our spiritual defences to safeguard our faith against doubts, sin and negative feelings such as grudges and hatred.
Here are some important points about the Iron Dome that we can apply to our spiritual defence:
Detection and Awareness: The Iron Dome radar system continuously scans for incoming threats before they get too close. Similarly, we must remain vigilant in identifying spiritual threats that could weaken our faith, such as negative influences, temptations and doubts.
Assessment and Discernment: The Iron Dome evaluates whether an identified projectile poses a real danger. In our faith journey, this corresponds to discerning which influences or thoughts are harmful and require our attention. Many spiritual attacks don’t come in obvious forms; instead, they often arrive subtly – through media, relationships, personal struggles, or even our own thoughts. The devil knows that a direct attack on faith might be too apparent, so he often works through small compromises, gradual shifts in belief and distractions that pull us away from God.
Interception and Action: When a threat is confirmed, the Iron Dome launches an interceptor to neutralise it. Spiritually, this means taking proactive steps, which can range from taking part in Chains of Prayer and using other spiritual tools, to taking more drastic changes, like letting go of habits, practices or even friendships that pose a threat to our souls. Finally, just as Israel continually enhances its Iron Dome, we too must actively strengthen our faith to withstand life’s challenges and remain steadfast.
Every Wednesday, we are holding a Bible study titled ‘Defending Our Faith’, where we further explore strategies for building strong spiritual defences. By understanding and implementing these principles, we can ensure that our hearts and minds are protected against attacks that seek to weaken us. Join us at your nearest Universal Church at 7.30pm (also at 7am, 10am & 3pm).
