The Man Who Lives in a Demon World

Demon Faces

Victor Sharrah had perfect vision until suddenly, in 2020, something really odd happened. The 59-year-old man from Clarksville, Tennessee, woke up and saw his roommate heading to the bathroom. Nothing out-of-normal so far, but when he looked at his friend’s face, Victor noticed that it seemed distorted, looking, according to him, “like something out of a Star Trek movie, like a demon face.” Then his girlfriend walked in and her face was the same. “My first thought was I woke up in a demon world. You can’t imagine how scary it was,” he said.

He was diagnosed with PMO (prosopometamorphopsia), a rare disorder often associated with epilepsy that results in a distorted perception of other people’s faces, making everyday interactions surreal and disorienting. Researchers believe this disorder stems from issues in brain areas responsible for facial recognition. In the last 100 years, there have only been 81 documented cases of PMO worldwide.

While Victor’s case is considered a medical condition, the phenomenon of seeing demon-like figures or strange shadows is frequently reported in various cultural, psychological, and paranormal contexts. In 2019, for instance, several people claimed to see demons after watching the Netflix horror film “Eli.”
