Human actions, such as environmental degradation and resource exploitation, are jeopardising the survival of Earth and its inhabitants, leading to severe consequences for food, energy and water security. A recent report by the Planetary Health-Earth Commission, published in the Lancet journal, revealed that Earth has transgressed seven of the eight safe “Earth system boundaries” necessary for sustainable life.
The concept of “Planetary Boundaries” was introduced by scientists 15 years ago to identify threats to Earth’s sustainability. The recent report reveals that the following boundaries have already been breached: functional integrity, natural ecosystem area, climate, phosphorus, nitrogen, surface water and groundwater. Additionally, in many regions around the world, the eighth boundary – air pollution – has also been crossed at the local level, intensifying the ecological balance threats.
These findings point to an increasingly critical scenario for life on our planet. This alarming reality is not only an environmental issue, it also threatens the security and stability of all nations, since the destruction of essential natural resources, such as water and food, can intensify conflicts, lead to forced migrations and create widespread social chaos.
This planetary health crisis raises serious questions about our future and acts as a wake-up call for humanity to broaden its perspective, especially in light of biblical prophecies concerning the end times. There are significant parallels between the environmental destruction – and the chaos it can bring – and the biblical descriptions found in the Book of Revelation. This is the central theme of our new Bible study, “Warnings of the End.”
