Grocery Chain Leverages AI to Combat Shoplifting

Shoplifter
Shoplifting in England and Wales has reached its highest level in 20 years, with police recording 443,995 offences in the year leading up to March 2024. This marks a 30% increase from the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

With rising prices driven by the ongoing cost of living crisis, retail theft has surged, leading the Co-operative grocery store to take action. In the first half of the year, the retailer saw shoplifting-related costs soar by nearly 20%, amounting to a staggering £39.5 million.

As part of its strategy, the Co-op is involved in Project Pegasus, an AI initiative that shares CCTV footage with other retailers and the police to help identify repeat offenders. The company is also trialling advanced technology capable of detecting concealed weapons or stolen items, which has been installed in 14 branches so far.

The rise in theft coincides with growing financial hardship in the UK. As winter approaches, reports indicate that up to 5.5 million Britons have no savings, with 13% of adults lacking any financial safety net making it harder for low- income families to access basic necessities.
