In a controversial incident, a student at Campbell County High School in Kentucky, United States, had his diploma withheld after he included references to his Christian faith in his graduation speech.
Micah Price was selected as a student speaker for the school’s graduation ceremony on May 24. In his pre-approved remarks, Price included the statement, “honour, praise and glory to my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” He went on to encourage his fellow graduates and the audience to follow Jesus, citing a Biblical passage from the Gospel of John.
After the speech, a member of the school board reportedly questioned Price and informed him that he had disrespected school rules. The school required a meeting with Price five days later, after which he finally received his diploma.
Price acknowledged that he had been advised not to mention Jesus in his speech, and he agreed that he should have been punished for going against the school’s instructions. However, Price maintained that he could not avoid honouring his “Lord and Saviour” in his own words.
“I went against the rules. I should have been punished, which I agree with. But I can’t go anywhere without mentioning what my Lord and Saviour has done for me and what He has brought into my life. I deserved to be punished, but through Christ we prevail. My Lord and Saviour is the answer. He is the truth, the way and the life. I must give honour, praise and glory to Jesus Christ,” he concluded.
Micah Price will join the US Air Force in July of this year.
In moments like the one Micah Price experienced, it is common to pay tribute to parents, teachers, or friends. However, few are those who recognise God in their accomplishments.
Therefore, those who maintain a heart dedicated to honouring God in every aspect of their lives are equally honoured by Him:
“[…] For those who honour Me I will honour, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” (1 Samuel 2:30).
