Many participate of this special ceremony in a religious manner without understanding it’s real significance.
However, Apostle Paul made it clear in his letter to the Corinthians that whoever takes part of this ceremony in a careless way would be condemned (1 Corinthians 11:27 NKJV).
The Bible goes on to explain that for this very reason, many within the church have been attending the services for countless years but remain weak in their faith. Resulting in frustrated church members and unfortunately those who decide to leave the presence of God.
So perhaps you ask, how should I take part of this Holy Ceremony?
The Lord’s Supper is vital for all who consider themselves to be a Christian, whether they are new to faith or have been serving God for many years. Here are 4 reasons why this ceremony is so essential.
1 – If we do not take part in the Lord’s Supper, we have no part with Him.
Our Lord Jesus better explains this in the book of John:
“(…) Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6:53 NKJV)
The Lord Jesus highlighted a key aspect of the Christian walk in this verse. Partaking in this commemorative act, allows us to affirm our reliance on the Lord Jesus, acknowledging our faith in the sacrifice He made on the Cross and its redemptive power. Meaning that if we do not take part, we effectively isolate ourselves from Him.
2 – The Lord’s Supper is an act of fellowship for the church.
This ceremony is an act of fellowship within the Christian community, strengthening the bond of their common faith and shared identity in Christ. Just as Jesus desired to eat with His Apostles, we must desire to come together and share in the Holy communion (Luke 22:14-15).
3 – The Lord’s Supper symbolises the covenant we have with the Lord Jesus.
The Lord’s Supper was established by the Lord Jesus Himself, as He disclosed the new covenant that God was about to make with man through His sacrifice on the Cross (Luke 22:20). Just like with the previous covenant where animal blood was required to authenticate an agreement with God, this new covenant was now to be ratified with the blood of Jesus.
He willingly shed His blood for our sins to be washed away and for us to have right standing before God. Without His atoning sacrifice, we would not be able to enter into a covenant with a perfect and righteous God.
4 – We show that we remember Him.
“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “this is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19 NKJV)
Jesus’ journey to the Cross was a truly selfless act of love for all of humanity. However, this did not guarantee that everyone would accept or even remember this after some time. Hence the specific instruction “do this in remembrance of me”.
The way we need to remember what Jesus did is not simply by recollecting the historical facts or by being sorrowful about Him going through so much pain. It’s for us to engage in this act of Holy Communion with profound reflection and the reverence it deserves, acknowledging His willing sacrifice.
We must consciously appreciate the gift of salvation that we have been offered for eternity and strive to live daily in acceptance of this gift!
