From humble beginnings in a hired community hall in 1995, to becoming a beacon of hope and love in the Rainbow Theatre and beyond, the journey of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in the UK highlights the need for perseverance and faithfulness in any worthy endeavour and is a testament to the transformative power of faith.
A New Beginning
It all started in a small, hired community hall. The vision was grand; a dream to spread the gospel and give those who were suffering a place that they could find hope and a solution. Not long after, the small weekly gatherings moved to 376 Brixton Road, where they rapidly grew. The very evident determination to help those in need led not only to an increasing number of attendees, but also the development of several heartfelt connections among those who walked through the doors.
The Rainbow Theatre: A Symbol of Renewal
One of the landmark moments in the Universal Church’s journey was acquiring the then derelict and abandoned Rainbow Theatre. Over 13 years, this refurbishment project mirrored the church’s mission: transforming broken lives into something truly wonderful. The restoration of the Rainbow Theatre stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and renewal. The real life experiences that you will read below are a testament to this. Many who have walked through the doors of the church came either feeling hopeless or like life was falling apart. Today, these same people have had their lives turn around in such a way, it’s hard to believe how broken they once were.
Iconic events and precious memories
Over the past three decades, the church has hosted several unforgettable events that have touched hearts and changed lives. The Lifted event in April 2000 at the London Arena was attended by 9,500 people, many of whom went on to become core members of the church. And in 2007, some of these in turn, took on the Ben Nevis challenge to save one of our South London branches in the area of Peckham.
The Signs event at West Ham Stadium with 20,000 attendees, the Day of Power at QPR Stadium, and the Ask event at Copper Box Arena have all left indelible marks on all those who believed. We have seen relationships nurtured and intelligent love fostered through other large-scale events, namely the Love School and the Love Walk, among others.
Nurturing through Community Groups
Our impact goes beyond hosting events. Numerous community groups have been launched to cater to all age groups, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported. Seniors find solace in the Caleb Group, youths thrive in the VYG, and pre-teens and kids have a place in the UTF and CBC. The Patient Care Group (PCG) conducts regular hospital visits, bringing comfort to those in need. The ROD Group supports inmates and their families, while the local community benefits from our dedicated soup kitchens and food banks.
A growing family
What began as weekly meetings in a hall has grown into a network of 38 full-time branches, open 365 days a year, and 8 part-time branches across London and the UK. This incredible growth is a testament to the unwavering faith, love, and commitment of the UCKG family.
Charles Ajorgbor, Finsbury Park
“I’ll never forget the Lifted event at the London arena. It was such a significant moment for me. It was the first major event I attended after joining the church in 1999. At that point, I had been part of the church for about a year, and this was the first event we held at an arena. The preparation and effort that went into it made the experience even more special. I especially loved going out to the streets in the lead-up to the event, inviting people to join us. Serving as a helper on the day was a real privilege. Guiding people to their seats gave me a real sense of involvement and purpose. Seeing so many people gathered in the arena, all seeking spiritual upliftment, was truly inspiring. I can still picture the bright yellow t-shirts and recall the ‘Lifted’ song that was sung that day. Even now, hearing that song brings back the same joy and excitement I felt then. It’s a memory I’ll always treasure.”
