Shall we do a reflection exercise? Think of an addicted person and everything related to that person. Have you thought? Most likely you imagined someone in a bad state, bewildered and using some drug, such as alcohol, cocaine or something similar. But linking the word addiction only to the use of narcotics is a big mistake . After all, addiction is the habit of doing something over and over again, which brings momentary pleasure but ultimately harms us.
Margaret Murphy, 45, is an example of this. She used to live in Dublin, Ireland, which has a cold and rainy climate, and moved to sunny Crete, Greece. There, the woman created the habit of sunbathing and ended up becoming addicted to tanning. For 10 years she remained in the sun frequently and without protection. “I spent a decade living in Crete and tanning to look good, believing that because I was already tan I didn’t need sunscreen,” she wrote on her social media.
And unfortunately, in December of last year, she had to start a 28-day course of treatment to remove pre-cancerous lesions from her face ( see above ).
Observing what Margaret did, we can identify that we all have some addiction: eating sweets every day, being dependent on someone, telling lies, seeing inappropriate content on the internet, among many others. Attitudes that seem common, but that, over time, will bring consequences, whether for health, relationships or spiritual life.
“The first step to getting rid of it (an addiction) is to recognize that you have it. The second step is admitting that you need help to stop. The mark of the addict is lying to yourself, saying ‘I can stop whenever I want’. If you could, you would have stopped”, explains writer Renato Cardoso .
