The film “Anaconda” was very successful in the 1990s. With artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube in the cast, the work talks about a group of people who find themselves trapped on a boat in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon. There, they fight to survive against a giant snake that became known as “anaconda”.
The snake in the film is 12 meters long and has enormous strength, being able to devour several people in a short period of time. In real life, a snake like this is, on average, 8 meters long as an adult. Although not venomous, it is very strong and its bite can seriously injure a person. As an aquatic species, the anaconda is very fast and tends to drown its prey by holding it underwater.

Young Carlos Andrade, on a walk along the Amazonian river, Nhamundá stayed, not caring about the data above. Upon seeing the 5-meter snake, he approached and, not noticing the animal’s reaction, decided to pose for a selfie . The image was posted and went viral on social networks this week, generating admiration from thousands of people who liked and shared the image. Carlos was in the municipality of Nhamundá, 375 kilometers from the capital, Manaus, but the photo, on the internet, won the whole world.
Worth it?
Fortunately, the boy was not hurt when invading the anaconda’s territory, but the risk he took was great. Although she didn’t move at the time, she is very quick to strike and the desire to publish that photo could have taken the boy’s life.
“Think before you act, say or do what is right at certain times. Often, the idea of what is the right thing comes too late”, recommends the blog of writer Cristiane Cardoso. “Focus on the moment and ask yourself what would be the right thing to do in that moment. Paying attention to what you could do gives you a chance to do what’s right before it’s too late.”
Many people have such a desire to gain attention from others, to achieve popularity through selfies, that they put their own lives at risk. This is what has happened, for example, with people who take pictures on top of skyscrapers or precipices just to become popular. And not a few have died in the attempt to take the perfect selfie.
Attitudes like these reveal the unhealthy need to be approved by other people. Anyone who takes pictures putting their lives on the line for popularity is actually putting their own happiness in other people’s hands. If the photos are successful on the internet, they will be happy. If they don’t, they will be sad. This “happiness”, however, only lasts for a short time . Soon the image is forgotten and it becomes necessary to take new pictures, each time more dangerous. People who act like this will never be truly happy.
“From the moment you stop depending on others to be happy, you become a better person in every sense”, says Cristiane. “Of course, not all people will value you, there are always those who live on appearances; but for those who have values and principles that are never demolished by the opinions of third parties, they will always respect you.”
