Jewellery skills taught to parents and children

Christian Church, Christian faith, Finsbury Park, jewellery-making, listening ear, Rainbow Theatre, Seven Sisters Road,

Thursday 29th May 2014

Local parents and their children gathered for an afternoon of jewellery-making and relaxation, held on Saturday, 24th May in the Andover Estate’s Community Hub.

Whilst some of the children enjoyed face-painting and simple jewellery-making, older children and parents spent time in creating their own master-pieces.

The free workshop was led by north London jewellery maker, designer and teacher, Melissa Doussey and hosted by the Lone Parents Group of the UCKG HelpCentre in Finsbury Park. In all, 12 mothers attended, with some 15 children (boys and girls), all from the local community.

Daisy Ajorgbor who leads the Lone Parents Group said: “The atmosphere was very warm and therapeutic. Many lone parents don’t get the time to do something for themselves and our aim is to help them to find that all-important balance and ‘me-time’.”

Hiwet Tesfazon from Hornsey Road said: “It was nice and fun, especially making jewellery with my daughters. I learnt a talent that I didn’t know I had!”

Caroline Cairus from Manor House, said: “Making the jewellery was a bit difficult at the beginning, but I soon got the hang of it. With Christmas coming up again I already have lovely gift ideas for my family and friends. Sometimes you just can’t afford to buy everyone a gift so making jewellery for them will be lovely.”

Charmain Duncan added: “The event was very well organised and instructed. I loved it. It was also practical – the skills taught today can help me start my own business.”

Jewellery-maker Melissa Doussey, who taught the class was a natural and her enthusiasm infectious, as she helped each parent to express their creativity through making jewellery for themselves and their children.

Melissa, who grew up in a single parent home following her father’s death added: “I absolutely loved today’s event. The whole family feel was priceless.”

The event is one of a series of workshops organised by the Lone Parents’ Group of the UCKG HelpCentre in Finsbury Park. The next event, ‘TEA and a CHAT’ will be held from 1pm this coming Saturday, 31st May at the Rainbow Theatre, 232 Seven Sisters Road, London N4 3NX.
