Q: My youth pastor has been talking to us about dreaming big and believing in ourselves, and to be honest, I’ve always been like that.  I’m 18 and I’ve decided that I want to start an architect business on my own.  My uncle does construction and is teaching me a lot of things and I have complete confidence that I can be a big success before I’m 25.  My dad says that I need to get a degree first, but I don’t accept his negativity because he’s always putting me down.

A. It’s true that we have to dream big and believe in ourselves.  Being successful requires a lot of courage, but it also requires a lot of down-to-earth, practical common sense. Being an architect is a wonderful profession, but no one can legally call themselves an architect in this country without a degree and a state license.   Just faith alone will not get you very far unless you employ your intelligence and do what needs to be done to get where you want to go.

There is no doubt that God wants to see you succeed and that you could very well be a great architect by 25, but you have to be willing to pay the price, hit the books, pass your exams, and get that degree.  No sacrifice, no success!

Q: I believe with no doubt in my heart that I'm going to the NBA (National Basketball Association) but how do I know if what I want is God’s will?

A: Be sure, if God wants you there, you will be there! I believe your intention is to be the best for Him. If basketball is your talent, go for it, just make sure you put God first all the way through!

Seek God and ask Him to show you His will for your life. But know one thing, just as we are speaking about in the VYG. You must see great things happening in your life. So where will you be?
